This is a fantastic resource for upper primary, to support reading comprehension and skills. The Literature circles pack contains a PDF outlining the different roles that pupils can take on within the group, alongside a rota sheet. This can be supported by an adult or a completely pupil-led series of reading sessions.
Pupils choose the role they will take on for the week and discuss this with their groups. The teacher, or pupils themselves, set pages for the week and students work independently to complete their task. At the review session, pupils bring their completed task to discuss with their group. Students can then self or peer assess using red, amber or green to give a clear picture of how well they have participated that week.
In this lesson, pupils use the metaphor of a ‘nation’ or ‘country’ as a tool for exploring their own identity. This lesson was originally done as part of our Scottish topic - hence the tartan! But is applicable at any time, with really great results.
